                                                                             Author Guidelines for Manuscript Preparation

 

When preparing your manuscript, please follow these general guidelines. The most important underlying principles: keep your manuscript as simple and as consistent – on every level – as possible. Please contact the library with any queries.

 

 

1.  Technical Presentation

 

  • The manuscript should be in Microsoft Word, file
  • The paper size should be set to A4 (not Letter).
  • Margins should be set to 20mm on all sides and the text should all be either fully justified or left-aligned.
  • Use a single font family throughout; a sans serif font such as Arial or Calibri is
  • The text should be single-spaced and use a 12-point
  • All illustrations, figures, and tables should be placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • Do not use automatic hyphenation or double
  • Use a hard return (Enter) only to start a new paragraph or section; to break a line, use a soft return (Shift+Enter).
  • A basic structure, including a (manually created, not automatically generated) Table of Contents and any proposed front matter and end matter, should be
  • Use distinct heading levels; for example:
    • level 1: bold, 12 pt
    • level 2: bold, italics, 11 pt
    • level 3: italics, 11 pt
    • If numbering is used to indicate heading levels, apply it throughout the manuscript with Arabic figures, i.e., 3, 3.1, 3.1.1, etc

 

  • Do not use numbering on more than 3 levels; rather use bullets to indicate a level-4 heading
  • Avoid all automatic insertions, such as a generated Table of Contents, hidden links or equations.
  • Where required, lists of figures, tables and illustrations must be
  • All imagery – including photographs, diagrams, graphs and tables – must be supplied in a minimum resolution of 300dpi (this is the minimum required for printing purposes).
  • All diagrams, graphs, tables and images must be named according to their placement in the manuscript (Figure 6.1 for Figure 1 in Chapter 6), and as such must be clearly indicated in the text.
    • Tables and imagery must be correctly numbered and referenced in the running text (the first table in Chapter 7 is Table 7.1, not Table 1).
    • Tables and imagery must all have captions to be placed at the top of a table, and at the bottom of an image.
  • A list of all material (eg photographs, figures, illustrations, quotations) for which rights clearance has been sought (or still needs to be sought) is provided. Please include as much detail as possible; we suggest making use of an Excel spreadsheet for this purpose, especially if multiple clearances are needed. Please consult with the press manager for additional clarity in this regard, if required.
  • A complete Reference List must be provided using APA 7th Sources must be listed alphabetically by author name, and each author’s works chronologically. These works can be arranged from new to old or vice versa, but it must be consistent throughout the publication.

 

  • Citations and references must all be provided, and should be formatted according to a single style, with rules consistently applied.
